It’s been several years since fans have seen CM Punk in a WWE ring, as he walked away from the company in 2014 and hasn’t returned since.
Punk has been focused on his MMA career, and he made his UFC debut when he fought Mickey Gall in September of 2016. Unfortunately for Punk, he wasn’t able to get much offense in as Mickey Gall defeated him in 2 minutes and 45 seconds.
The former WWE Champion has since been training for his second fight in UFC, and he’s teased that it could be taking place in Chicago on June 9th.
During a recent appearance on the Luke Thomas Show on Sirius XM, Punk’s coach and friend Duke Roufus shared an update on Punk’s progress, and he indicated that he’s made some major improvements.
“200 percent [better],” said Roufus via MMAFighting.com. “I’m not even his coach. We were friends first before we did this. I would not do this with anyone else except for my friendship with him from before he decided to fight. He’s just one hell of a guy. He’s a celebrity but he’s different than a lot of celebrities I know. Great guy. He works his ass off. He’s very well-liked on our team and he’s improved a lot.”
After Punk was defeated by Mickey Gall, it took some time for Dana White to confirm that Punk would be getting a second fight in UFC, but eventually he did.
Whether you love him or hate him, there’s no denying that Punk brings name value to UFC, Duke Roufus went on to say the hope is Punk will pick up a victory the next time around.
“Let’s face it, Mickey Gall was a tough draw. He’s done quite well in the UFC so far. I think the UFC did the right thing. We don’t want to defame the sport or damage it by putting him in an un-legitimate fight. That being said, it’s very hard. They want him to come in and beat somebody, ya know?”
As of this writing UFC has yet to officially confirm CM Punk’s next fight, but it’s rumored that he could be facing Mike Jackson at UFC 225.
