CM Punk has been lucky enough to face off against some huge names throughout his wrestling career and there’s no denying that he’s been a part of some memorable matches.
John Cena turned out to be one of CM Punk’s greatest rivals as they faced off on a number of occasions. During a recent appearance on No Contest Wrestling, CM Punk was asked to list his top 3 matches from his career, and he put his match with John Cena from the February 25, 2013 episode of Raw right at the top.
“I think it’s easy to pick number one, it’s me and John Cena from Houston leading up to WrestleMania. It was on a Monday Night Raw. Easily I think our best-televised match, we might have had better matches on house shows, I don’t know. But that is also my flu match. I was sick, and boy was I sick and tired at that point. So that is like the essence of CM Punk at that moment, hurt, tired, pissed off, chip on his shoulder, me and John went out there, it was just planets aligned and it was magic.
If I could ever say that I had a perfect match, that would probably be it. I’m talking lead up, story, character stuff for both guys, action, crowd, being able to manipulate the crowd how you wanted, listening to them, like everything. I gotta give a shout out to Michael Cole on commentary too, because he’s been the voice of so many epic moments in my career. And this is the match where I hit the pile driver on John.”
“I’ve had good matches in front of bad crowds. I’ve had bad matches in front of good crowds. So I would disqualify certain matches based on those criteria. But as close to perfect as you can possibly get, I would put CM Punk vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania. And these are all around the same time too. So could possibly be like the zenith of my in ring career? I don’t know. I still like to think I’m operating at a pretty high level. Me vs. Brock at Staples Center, SummerSlam. I think those three are a pretty good list.”
