CM Punk is, and always will be a controversial figure. It’s been a long time since fans have seen Punk do what he does best inside a wrestling ring, and this past January marked the third anniversary of the day he walked out on WWE.
Even though CM Punk seems to want to break away from his wrestling past, there’s still no denying that Punk left behind an incredible legacy inside the squared circle. CM Punk started out on the independent wrestling scene, and worked his way up to become the longest reigning WWE Champion of the modern era, but it wasn’t easy.
Punk wasn’t viewed as a star by WWE officials, so he had to try extra hard to get people’s attention. In the summer of 2011, Punk’s WWE contract was set to expire as he was entering a feud with John Cena. He was unsure if he was going to sign a new contract, and he changed the course of WWE history when he was given a microphone and told to let loose.
CM Punk then made his way out to the Raw stage after John Cena had been beaten down, and he proceeded to cut a promo that is now known as the infamous “pipe bomb promo.” He held nothing back as he ripped apart Vince McMahon, Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and delivered a promo where he vented his real life frustrations. The promo helped Punk become a star, as he went on to win the WWE Championship a few weeks later, which inevitably opened the doors for other wrestlers who might not have been given opportunities in the main event scene.
Yesterday marked the six year anniversary of the day Punk cut the promo, and he took a moment to acknowledge the anniversary by simply posting a photo of a pipe bomb on Instagram.
It doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing Punk return to WWE anytime soon, but you can relive the promo one more time if you like via the video below.
