Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Christian Cage spent seven years sitting on the sidelines, but at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view back in January he shocked the world when he returned to the ring during the 30 man Royal Rumble match.
Following his return at the Royal Rumble fans were hopeful that they would see more of Christian on WWE programming in the future, but he has since made the jump to AEW.
During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated Christian was asked why WWE didn’t sign him immediately after his return, and he noted that he wasn’t sure where the company was at in regards to creative.
“There were some cordial talks, and I can’t really elaborate beyond that. I’m not sure where their heads were at creatively.”
Christian also explained how Jon Moxley played a role in him signing with AEW.
“Moxley is a good friend of mine, and he was saying, ‘You’re a free agent; you should at least have a conversation with Tony Khan.’ So I did. Listening to the things Tony thought I could bring to the table and how he thought I could help, providing me the right platform at this stage in my career, it all made sense. In less than a week, it was a done deal.”
