Chris Jericho faced off against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 33, and their match was the culmination of a storyline that played out for several months. In the end Owens defeated Jericho, and then Jericho made his exit from WWE shortly after, but plans for the first ever Undisputed Champion changed a few times ahead of WrestleMania 33.
Jericho has said in the past that the original idea for his feud with Kevin Owens was for him to beat Owens and win the Universal Title at WrestleMania 33, but obviously plans changed as Brock Lesnar and Goldberg fought for the Universal Championship.
However, the Fozzy frontman also recently revealed that there was another plan in place before Kevin Owens was set to be his opponent, and during a recent chat with Inside The Ropes (via Sportskeeda), Jericho noted that he had convinced Vince McMahon to let him work with Shinsuke Nakamura.
“After we went to Japan in June or July I remember coming back and talking to Vince, and I said you’ve got to bring this Nakamura guy up to the main roster. I wanna work with him. Let’s debut him at WrestleMania. I said I’ll stay until WrestleMania if I can work with Nakamura. Vince said okay. Then about a month later, I said that I actually think me and Kevin Owens could work at WrestleMania.”
Plans are always changing in the world of professional wrestling, but it’s interesting to think of what could have been.
As of right now Chris Jericho is working with New Japan Pro Wrestling, and it looks like he might be sticking around for a while. But there’s no telling what the future might hold, so perhaps we will see Jericho and Nakamura face off at WrestleMania someday.
