John Cena’s return to WWE programming is less than a week away, but his creative plans haven’t been revealed yet. The WWE Universe still doesn’t know whether or not Cena will be on Raw or SmackDown Live, but there seem to be some plans for him with the latter.

There have been rumors about him feuding with Jinder Mahal at Summerslam. However, he needs an opponent for Battleground first. It was recently reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE officials are looking at The Bulgarian Brute to feud with Cena heading into the Battleground PPV.
Rusev has been waiting on the sideline for his own return to SmackDown Live over the last few weeks. WWE officials haven’t figured out a way to bring him back to WWE television. A new rivalry with John Cena could be good to keep both men busy through Battleground.
It’s likely that Rusev would put over Cena heading into the biggest show of the summer. It would give Cena a big win and prepare him for whatever feud is coming next. Rusev would get back on television and continue to work towards breaking through into the main event.
