Buff Bagwell managed to get a decent run out of his career in WCW, and during his run with the company he won tag team gold. Bagwell joined WWE after WCW was purchased by Vince McMahon, and he ended up fighting for the WCW World Title in the main event of Monday Night Raw when he made his WWE debut, but his WWE run was quickly derailed.
The match has a reputation for being one of the most awkward matches in the history of Raw, and Buff Bagwell recently told Cult of Whatever that he believes he and Booker T were set up to fail in his Monday Night Raw debut.
“What people don’t realise is that they put Booker T and myself on as the main event of Monday Night Raw for the WCW World Title in Seattle, Washington with all of the odds against us. A week later WWE were going to be in Atlanta, Georgia, why could they have not waited seven days and put Booker T v Buff Bagwell for the WCW World Championship on in Atlanta which was the home of WCW instead of seven days earlier in Seattle where we got booed out of the building. My honest opinion is that it was set up for us to fail, it didn’t work and we knew we shouldn’t have been in the main event, we knew there was something wrong about it but you don’t ask questions in this business you just go and do what your told.”
Bagwell’s run with WWE didn’t last very long at all. As a matter of fact, if you blinked between July 2, 2001 and July 9, 2001, then you probably missed it. The former WCW Tag Team Champion clearly has no love for Vince McMahon, as he called him “Satan” when asked to describe him as a boss.
However, Buff Bagwell had nothing but good things to say about his boss in WCW, Eric Bischoff.
“I thought he was the best, he was the best to me, I’ve heard other people say different things about him but in my opinion he was the best.”
If you want to see Buff wrestle then you better go see him soon, as he recently announced his farewell tour.
