The “Montreal Screwjob” is one of the most infamous incidents in all of professional wrestling and it caused Bret Hart to be very bitter toward WWE for many years. After Vince McMahon decided to pull a fast one on Bret Hart by ending the match on a fluke and awarding the WWE Title to Shawn Michaels, Bret confronted McMahon backstage.
It’s a well knock fact that Bret Hart punched Vince McMahon in the face, and Bret recently told Sports Illustrated that it was The Undertaker who made Vince confront The Hitman and explain his actions.
“I punched out Vince McMahon in the locker room, but the only reason Vince was in the locker room was because of Undertaker,” explained Hart. “Undertaker pounded on Vince’s door after the ‘Screwjob.’ He said, ‘Get your ass down to that dressing room and explain yourself’, and Vince wouldn’t have listened to anybody else.”
Bret Hart was a vital part of the WWE locker room, but after he parted ways with the company and shipped off to WCW, the WWE was without a leader. Bret also revealed that he wrote Undertaker a letter telling him that he needed to step up and become the leader of the locker room after he left.
“I wrote ’Taker a letter when I left,” revealed Hart. “I said, ‘You have to be the voice of the dressing room and the leader now that I’m gone.’ I always felt that I was the leader of the dressing room and looked after everything. If guys had a problem, they could come to me and I’d go to Vince and say, ‘This guy has a problem, maybe you can help him.’ Then ’Taker stepped in and became that guy. A lot of times he had to straighten out guys like Shawn Michaels and stand up for the other wrestlers. Undertaker was always a force in the dressing room.”
It’s safe to say that The Undertaker took his role as a locker room leader very seriously, as he’s arguably the most respected man in all of professional wrestling.
