Earlier this year Roman Reigns was scheduled to challenge Goldberg for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36, but The Big Dog pulled out of the event due to concerns stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.
Braun Strowman was then inserted into the match, and he managed to defeat Goldberg in a short match which saw The Monster Among Men win the Universal Championship for the first time in his career.
Strowman’s opportunity to work a huge match at WrestleMania came at the last minute, and he noted during an episode of WWE Chronicle that Roman Reigns called him to give him his blessing.
”Roman called me and talked about what was going on, and almost gave me the proverbial nod. Like, hey it’s your time to drive the bus. Go do work.”
Strowman ended up holding the title from WrestleMania 36 through SummerSlam where he dropped it to The Fiend.
Roman Reigns returned immediately after the match and went on to win the Universal Championship in a triple threat match one week later at Payback.
