The world was shocked to find out that beloved wrestling personality Bobby “The Brain” Heenan had passed away over the weekend. Bobby Heenan was considered by many to be the greatest manager of all time, and he was an icon in the professional wrestling business.
In 2002 Bobby Heenan, real name Raymond Louis Heenan, was diagnosed with throat cancer and he had been in remission since 2004. The Tampa Bay Times is reporting that Heenan died due to organ failures which were caused by the disease. Bobby Heenan’s daughter commented on his passing saying that, “It was just his time.”
Lanny Poffo also spoke to the Tampa Bay Times, and he commended Heenan for his ability to get a reaction from the fans. “Andre the Giant was the most popular wrestler of the century. But put Andre with Bobby Heenan and he was hated. It was that simple,” Poffo said.
Bobby Heenan worked with some of the biggest names in the industry including “Ravishing” Rick Rude, “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig and King Kong Bundy just to name a few.
His commentary work with Gorilla Monsoon is remembered fondly by fans all over the world, and in 2004 he was honored by WWE when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Heenan may be gone, but his legacy will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
