For almost a year now fans have been wondering if The Undertaker will be returning to the ring following his dramatic exit after he was defeated by Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 33.
It’s been rumored that a match between The Undertaker and John Cena is being planned, but Cena cast doubt on the match this week on Raw. During his promo the 16 time WWE World Champion challenged Taker to a match at Mania, then said that it’s not going to happen because he’s been told it’s impossible.
Cena then announced that he’s heading to SmackDown Live to find his path to WrestleMania. However, Dave Meltzer noted on the most recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that Taker vs. Cena is still the plan, and Taker is still training for the match.
“It’s definitely still on the books, for anyone who’s asking, and Undertaker’s still training for it,” Meltzer said. “What I’m figuring, is he’s going to be on the Fastlane pay-per-view in a match.”
Meltzer went on to speculate that Cena could face Nakamura at the pay-per-view with Nakamura’s WrestleMania title shot on the line.
With Cena being advertised for Fastlane it seems to make sense that WWE won’t want to confirm his match with The Undertaker until the pay-per-view is over.
Fastlane is set to air on Sunday, March 5th, so if WWE officials do decide to move forward with Cena vs. Taker, that gives them a little over the month to build the match. But as we’ve seen in recent years, Undertaker’s WrestleMania matches need little to no build as Taker’s name is more than enough to sell the match.
