Last weekend Cody Rhodes won the 30 man Royal Rumble match and he’s currently set to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 39. While WWE is moving ahead with Cody vs. Roman there’s no denying that Sami Zayn has picked up some major momentum on the road to WrestleMania.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that the storyline with Sami Zayn and Roman Reigns was originally supposed to run as a comedy angle for a weeks, but it was changed to a WrestleMania season angle because it got so over with the fans. As of a few months ago the plan was to end up where the storyline is now with The Bloodline turning on Sami Zayn at the Royal Rumble and Roman Reigns beating Sami in a title match at Elimination Chamber.
It was acknowledged by a few people internally that they didn’t see how hot the angle would become and that it should be changed with a singles title change being the perfect climax to the storyline. However, neither Vince McMahon nor Triple H saw Sami Zayn as someone who could headline WrestleMania, and the belief is that WWE moving a singles match between Zayn and Reigns to WrestleMania isn’t going to happen.
It hasn’t been confirmed but the expectation is that Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn will team up to beat The Usos at WrestleMania 39. The idea is that KO and Sami Zayn will be bigger stars coming out of this storyline.
