Cody Rhodes returned to the ring back in January when he won the Royal Rumble match, and on Sunday night he challenged Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 39. It seemed that Cody had momentum on his side, but ultimately Roman Reigns retained the belts when he picked up the victory.
Fightful Select reports that the plan for Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns to have a match was decided last summer. It’s being said that when Vince McMahon was in power there was no plan for Roman Reigns to lose the titles. Once he was out of power the plan was put in motion to book the match with Cody.
There were people in WWE who defended the idea of Roman Reigns winning this past week and over the last week there was talk that he would be winning. It’s being said that the plan was set for Roman Reigns to win the match and several people were aware of it several weeks ago, but it’s not known when talent was informed.
A lot of the interference elements that were used in the match were not relayed to talent, refs or staff until the day of the show. When WWE sources were asked if Vince McMahon was involved in the decision they claimed that he wasn’t. Stay tuned for updates.
