WWE SummerSlam aired live from MetLife Stadium over the weekend and John Cena main evented night 2 when he defended his Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes in a street fight. Ultimately Cody Rhodes defeated John Cena to win the Undisputed WWE Championship for the second time in his career.

After the match Cody exited the ring so that John Cena could enjoy a moment with the fans, but the moment was interrupted when Brock Lesnar made his return. The Beast Incarnate stared down John Cena then stepped into the ring and hit the former champion with the F5 as the show went off the air.

During the SummerSlam post-show, Triple H implied that John Cena wanted to work with Brock Lesnar on his retirement tour when The Game said, “One of the first things I said to him [Cena] is who do you want, and how, and we’re working through that.”

Following SummerSlam, Dave Meltzer discussed Brock Lesnar’s WWE status on Wrestling Observer Radio and he noted that The Beast Incarnate was cleared by WWE legal four weeks ago.

“Four weeks ago, WWE legal cleared him (Brock Lesnar). As far as why, I don’t know, and that’s something to speculate on, because there’s a lot of stuff. Obviously everything relates to the Janel Grant lawsuit, and legal is either confident that their thing is going to arbitration and Lesnar’s not a factor at that point. Or they’re close to a settlement, and at that point Lesnar’s not a factor. Or somebody there just had a change of mind, and I don’t know which one of those it is.

I do know, everyone figured this out, but I can tell you factually, that the reason they didn’t do the press conferences was because of this angle that was going to happen.”

Prior to his return over the weekend Brock Lesnar last appeared on WWE programming when he faced off against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam in 2023. It was rumored that Lesnar was supposed to work with Gunther at WrestleMania 40, but he was pulled from WWE creative plans due to the Vince McMahon lawsuit.
