John Cena stepped into the ring for one final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event over the weekend when he faced off against Gunther. Ultimately the match ended with Gunther making John Cena tap out, and the finish was not well received by the fans in attendance at the Capital One Arena.

Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer discussed the finish on Wrestling Observer Radio, and it was suggested that the decision was likely John Cena’s and the decision was approved by Triple H.

“Here’s the thing; it was John Cena’s decision, okay? But even if it was, Triple H could’ve said ‘No, you’re actually not losing your last match.’ Or ‘No, you’re not going to quit.’ I mean, he could’ve said that. I think people are thinking that Triple H made a call and, like, John Cena maybe didn’t want to do it or whatever. I mean, that didn’t happen. John Cena, I’m sure, wanted to lose. But Triple H did not stop him. He did not say ‘No, I’m not going to let you do it,'” Alvarez said.

“At the end of the day, it was Paul’s decision. And hey, if people are mad, that’s who you boo,” Meltzer added.

Following John Cena’s retirement it’s been reported that he’s still expected to make appearances for WWE on and off screen. However, WWE is adamant that Cena won’t be stepping into the ring again, and they won’t be asking him to compete in another match.
