Earlier this year Cody Rhodes confirmed that his contract with All Elite Wrestling had expired, and the wrestling world immediately started talking about the possibility of him returning to WWE. Ultimately Cody Rhodes did return to WWE at WrestleMania 38, but it sounds like Warner Bros. Discovery wanted him to stay with AEW.
Fightful Select reports that Warner Bros. Discovery made several efforts to keep Cody Rhodes with the company. Rhodes had developed a good report with several people in WarnerMedia due to his work in AEW, Rhodes to the Top and the Go Big Show.
It’s being said that after the Warner Bros. Discovery merger there were inquiries gauging Cody’s interest in staying that were completely separate of AEW. Sam Linskey who works as Associate General Manager and Senior Vice President of Scripted Original programming for TNT, TBS and TruTv was among the people who reached out to Cody. There was no ill will between the two sides, but Cody reportedly told people who asked that it was, “time to leave the territory.”
People at WBD who spoke on the subject noted that they would have loved for Cody to stay, but it wasn’t a deal breaker. People at WBD are reportedly happy with AEW and specifically the numbers their numbers for September.
