Back in September, Tony Khan announced that CM Punk’s AEW contract had been terminated following a backstage incident at the AEW All In pay-per-view. Saturday night was a big night for CM Punk as he returned to WWE at Survivor Series, and Tony Khan was also busy with the AEW Collision/Rampage tapings.
During the Rampage tapings Wheeler Yuta defeated Katsuyori Shibata to become the new ROH Pure Champion and it was later reported that Shibata is expected to return to Japan.
Fightful Select is reporting that Tony Khan was more concerned with losing Kastuyori Shibata on Saturday night than he was with CM Punk’s WWE return at Survivor Series.
It’s also being reported that the majority of reactions from the AEW side were from people wondering what the reaction within WWE has been. The situation was compared to CM Punk’s return for AEW Collision in the sense that there had been people in AEW and WWE who said they didn’t want to work with him, and would consider leaving the company. However, there’s been no word on anyone from either company requesting to be released because of CM Punk’s return.
As recently as last month there top WWE talent was asking some in AEW if CM Punk was involved in The Devil storyline. It’s being reported that CM Punk was never discussed for the storyline.
Tony Khan was recently asked directly about CM Punk’s WWE return during an interview and he simply said, “Can’t talk about that nor do I think it’s the time or the place. But I appreciate you asking and I am really excited about AEW All In at Wembley Stadium. Not to dodge or duck your question, it’s just not something I can legally talk about.”
Stay tuned for more updates on the CM Punk situation as they become available.
