Vince McMahon returned to WWE in January to pursue a sale of WWE and it was recently reported by Bloomberg that McMahon is looking to sell the company for $9 billion dollars. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Saudi Arabia absolutely has interest in purchasing WWE, and the price of $9 billion would position Saudi Arabia as a leading contender to buy the company.
It was noted that someone involved with the possible sale on the Saudi side said earlier this week that there is definite interest when it comes to buying WWE. However, it’s not considered as important as Formula 1, which they wanted to purchase, or LIV Golf.
Saudi Arabia is said to be looking for properties with a worldwide fanbase that are preferably popular in the United States. They are not looking for these properties to maximize revenue or for their profitability, but rather because they want publicity and to normalize how the world views their country.
Saudi Arabia’s goals when it comes to buying WWE would be completely different from a company like Endeavor who would be looking to buy the company to turn gigantic profits. It was also noted that a Saudi purchase could change the salary structure and it would completely change the game when it comes to bidding for talent.
People in WWE have noted that they would prefer to sell WWE to a media company, but most stories seem to indicate that media companies aren’t looking to make a purchase at that level right now due to the uncertain future over changes in consumption. Stay tuned for updates.
