The Royal Rumble is set to air live from San Antonio this weekend and anticipation for the event is at an all time high. After this weekend fans should have a better idea of what the WrestleMania card will look like, and there’s been a lot of talk about who could be winning the Royal Rumble matches.
WWE has been promoting the return of Cody Rhodes for weeks now while Sami Zayn is seemingly becoming more and more popular with each passing week. Dave Meltzer speculated on Wrestling Observer Radio that the winner of the men’s Royal Rumble could either be Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn, or an outsider.
“I don’t know that they’re willing to have anybody beat Roman Reigns. Obviously Dwayne Johnson wasn’t beating Roman Reigns to win the title. Obviously Cody Rhodes’ name was in the mix and the way that storyline was, he almost had to win. But that doesn’t mean he would have won.
“I think people have an idea (of the Royal Rumble winner) as far as, it’s either gonna be Cody, it’s gonna be Sami, or they’re gonna bring in an outsider. Everything that’s happened in the last week or so, I don’t think it’s Dwayne. I was told it wasn’t and all indications are it’s not.”
Cody Rhodes has made it clear since he returned to WWE that it’s his goal to win the championship, so a title match at WrestleMania would certainly make sense for him from a storyline perspective. It was also recently reported that WWE pitched the idea of Steve Austin vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania. One way or another it will be interesting to see what the road to WrestleMania looks like after this weekend.
