CM Punk solidified his status as one of the top stars in All Elite Wrestling at Double or Nothing back in May when he defeated Adam Page to win the AEW World Championship. Unfortunately for Punk he had to spend most of the summer sitting on the sidelines due to injury.
Jon Moxley was crowned interim AEW World Champion in Punk’s absence, but Punk was defeated by Moxley in a unification match when he returned. CM Punk then went on to defeat Moxley at All Out to win the AEW World Championship for a second time, but he had to vacate the title due to injury shortly after the pay-per-view.
Dave Meltzer recently noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Tony Khan put interim AEW World Championship on Jon Moxley because he thought Moxley was the best guy for the job, and Moxley would be the right guy to build up Punk before he faced MJF.
Original plans called for for CM Punk to face MJF at All Out, but Punk vs. MJF had to get delayed because CM Punk got hurt. With all of the changes that took place to original plans CM Punk vs. MJF was going to be pushed back to Full Gear in November. However, it’s now speculated that Jon Moxley will likely face MJF at the Full Gear pay-per-view. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
