A few weeks ago Jon Moxley defeated CM Punk in a unification match to become the undisputed AEW World Champion, but he dropped the belt to CM Punk at the AEW All Out pay-per-view on Sunday night.
Following the show CM Punk got into a backstage altercation with The Elite, and Tony Khan announced on Wednesday that the AEW World Championship and AEW Trios Championship had both been vacated. A tournament is being held to crown a new AEW World Champion, and Jon Moxley is set to face off against Bryan Danielson in the semifinals next week.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that originally the idea was for Jon Moxley to take time off following the All Out pay-per-view and return to TV with a major angle. However, that all changed as the company is looking to Moxley, Chris Jericho, Adam Page and Bryan Danielson to carry things for now.
Jon Moxley cut a passionate promo on AEW Dynamite earlier this week and he noted that he was supposed to be on vacation, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be getting that vacation any time soon. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
