CM Punk returned to AEW a few weeks ago and he immediately confronted interim AEW World Champion Jon Moxley. Punk and Moxley faced off in a unification match this week on Dynamite which saw Moxley defeat Punk in just over three minutes to become the Undisputed AEW World Champion.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that this wasn’t the original plan for the TV match. It’s being said that it wasn’t done as a way to boost ratings as much it was about making Moxley the real champion as he personally hated the interim thing, and it was a way to tell a different story.
There seem to be differing opinions on the match as some liked it while others didn’t. Some felt that doing a rematch just 11 days later would hurt the PPV while others thought that the idea of keeping the match short and selling Punk’s injury would put create more doubt heading into the PPV.
As of right now it seems that the plan is for CM Punk and Jon Moxley to face off once again in the main event at All Out on September 4. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
