This week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown was a big show as Edge faced off against Sheamus for the first time ever. Ahead of the show Edge confirmed it was the last match on his contract, and he also claimed that his deal with WWE is up at the end of September. The Rated R Superstar has not made any announcements regarding whether or not he will be signing a new deal which has led to a lot of speculation about his future.
Fightful Select reports that there are many in AEW who think Edge coming in could be a real possibility. People close to Edge have claimed that the idea of him working in AEW isn’t as “out there” as some might think. Edge is not only close with Christian, but also Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler as they helped him prepare for his return to the ring.
It’s also being reported that the idea of Edge working with AEW was being discussed by a lot of people in the company even before he publicly announced that his match with Sheamus was the last match on his contract.
Tony Khan was originally interested in bringing Edge into AEW back in 2019, but that was before it was even known that it was possible for Edge to return to the ring. The discussions led to Edge contacting Vince McMahon which ultimately led to Edge returning to the ring.
It hasn’t been confirmed that Edge’s deal with WWE does indeed expire in September even though he has claimed it does. Edge has in the past worked people on social media and told people in 2019 that he wasn’t cleared ahead of his surprise return in 2020.
