Normally WWE ends the year with a pay-per-view in December, but that’s not the case in 2021 as the company is instead moving forward with the Day 1 PPV on January 1.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that the WWE Day 1 pay-per-view is Nick Khan’s idea. Current plans call for the WWE Day pay-per-view to become an annual event.
It was also noted that traditionally December pay-per-views do not perform well, and that holiday pay-per-views have either performed terribly, or great depending on the lineup. WWE has booked Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns for the show in hopes that it will help with making Day 1 a major annual event moving forward.
WWE sees Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns as the biggest match that they have right now, and the company didn’t think the Royal Rumble needed the match, so it’s been added to Day 1 to create more interest for the show.
