NJPW Wrestle Kingdom has come and gone, but the show featured some big moments. Former WWE star Sasha Banks made her NJPW debut under her new name Mercedes Mone, and current WWE star Karl Anderson competed at the event where he dropped the NEVER Openweight Championship to Tama Tonga.
Fightful Select reports that there was some talk of AJ Styles appearing at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom this year. Rocky Romero told Fightful’s Wrestling Perspective Podcast that The Phenomenal One thought it would be a cool idea. Romero noted that he believed AJ Styles would have been at Wrestle Kingdom if it were up to him.
However, any possibility of AJ Styles possibly appearing at Wrestle Kingdom was thrown out when Styles suffered a broken ankle a week before. It was clarified that there were never any official plans for Styles to appear at the event.
It’s not clear at this point in time when AJ Styles could be back in action, but he noted on Twitter a few weeks ago that this will be the longest he’s ever been out of the ring. Stay tuned for updates.
Just want you guys to know that I’m ok. Broken ankle is what I’m dealing with. No surgery, this just takes some time to recover. This will be the longest I've ever been out of the ring. Thanks for the prayers and get well wishes.
