This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite kicked off with Orange Cassidy defending his AEW All Atlantic Championship against Jay Lethal, and Cassidy managed to walk out with the gold. Later in the show it was announced that not only will Orange Cassidy defend the title against Jeff Jarrett next week, but that the belt has also been renamed the AEW International Championship.
Fightful Select reports that the name change had been in the works for quite some time. It’s being reported that Warner Bros. Discovery asked for something big to cross promote with Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Tony Khan had the idea to “level up” the championship.
Tony Khan reportedly had the new AEW International Championship belt made months ago to prepare for the announcement this week and next week to promote the movie. AEW is said to be excited to do cross promotional work with Warner Bros. Discover and attempts to have newsworthy items for such occasions.
All Elite Wrestling also wanted to have something newsworthy for the show in Winnipeg next week and wanted to increase the prestige for the title which is put on TV often in prime positions.
