Last year at WrestleMania 38, Roman Reigns faced off against Brock Lesnar on the Grandest Stage of Them All and they both put their titles on the line. In the end Roman Reigns won the match to become the new Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.
Fightful Select reports that prior to the Day 1 premium live event in 2022 there were no plans to unify the belts. However, when Roman Reigns was pulled from the event due to COVID-19 a late decision was made to have Brock Lesnar win the WWE Championship at the event and compete in a title unification match at WrestleMania 38.
It’s also being reported that at one point last year there were some internal documents indicated that there was a plan to split the Universal Championship and WWE Championship. There were plans for Seth Rollins, or Drew McIntyre to face Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship, but obviously that didn’t end up happening. Within a few weeks the plan was dropped and the idea of splitting the titles was abandoned. There’s no word on how WWE planned to split the titles.
WWE originally announced that King and Queen of the Ring was set to take place in May, but the show was changed to Night of Champions. Plans for the event were altered to accommodate the new WWE World Heavyweight Championship belt.
