CM Punk became AEW World Champion for the first time in his career when he beat Adam Page at Double or Nothing, but he delivered some devastating news to fans on Friday night when he announced during Rampage that he’s injured.
PWInsider reports that CM Punk is set to undergo surgery on his foot, but there’s no definitive word on how long he’ll be out of action following the surgery.
Punk competed in a six man tag team match during Dynamite this week and it’s being said that AEW officials were aware he was hurt after the match. However, it wasn’t confirmed that Punk would need surgery until Friday afternoon shortly before the Rampage broadcast.
AEW announced that a battle royal will be held on Wednesday and the winner of that match will face Jon Moxley in the main event. The winner of the main event will go on to Forbidden Door where an interim champion will be crowned. It’s also being reported that there was never a plan for CM Punk to relinquish the title as AEW follows what UFC does and crowns interim champions if needed.
