When Austin Aries was called up to the WWE main roster, his fans had high hopes for his career with the company. It seemed that he was off to a good start as he challenged Neville several times for the Cruiserweight Championship, but he failed to win the belt.
Aries was one of the top stars in the cruiserweight division, but it seems that WWE just wasn’t a good fit for the former TNA World Heavyweight Champion.
Austin Aries’ no compete clause recently expired so he’s filling up his schedule with matches on the independent circuit, and he recently told the Orlando Sentinel that he’s happy to have his freedom back.
“You can have a favorite band, but when they sign with a major label … maybe a new producer says, ‘You can’t do that, take this down a notch.’ And you’ll keep listening, but you’ll always think their first album was their best album,” said Aries, 39. “Just like music, I consider wrestling to be an art form, and I have a vision of what that art should look like. Now I’m allowed the freedom to make it all my own again, and I’m excited to have that back.”
Aries recently noted on Twitter that he’s set to make more money over the next few weeks than he did during his last four months with WWE, so it seems that his return to the indie circuit is going well so far.
