Matt and Jeff Hardy spent several years working away from WWE in Impact Wrestling, but they returned to the company that made them stars at WrestleMania 33 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, FL, on April 2, 2017.
The Hardy Boyz were surprise entrants in the ladder match for the Raw Tag Team Titles at the big event, and they ended up defeating Sheamus and Cesaro, Enzo and Big Cass, and Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows to win the titles.
The Hardys have been the reigning Raw Tag Team Champions even since WrestleMania 33, and they’ve had a target on their backs due to the fact that they’re holding gold. Sheamus and Cesaro have been trying to reclaim the belts, and they challenged Matt and Jeff Hardy for the titles at WWE Payback, but they failed to regain the titles they once held. Unfortunately for Matt and Jeff Hardy, Sheamus and Cesaro also decided to turn heel and take their anger out on The Hardy Boyz after they failed to win the belts.
Since then the feud between The Hardy Boyz and Sheamus and Cesaro has been heated, and it was recently confirmed that the Raw Tag Team Titles would be defended at Extreme Rules in a steel cage match.
Ahead of time it was announced that the only way to win the match was for both members of one team to escape the cage.
Both Hardys went to leave the cage and Jeff managed to escape. Sheamus brought Matt back into the cage, but he tried to escape again and Sheamus and Cesaro held onto him as Jeff tried to pull him down from the outside. Sheamus and Cesaro grabbed Matt and hit him with a powerbomb.
Jeff then went to the door and hit Cesaro in the face with it. Sheamus then hit the door with a Brogue Kick to knock Jeff to the outside as Cesaro climbed the cage, but Matt took Cesaro down and tried to climb.
Cesaro chased after Matt and grabbed him. Sheamus and Cesaro then hit Matt with a double White Noise from the top as Jeff climbed back into the cage. Jeff hit Whisper in the Wind on Cesaro and Sheamus from the top.
Matt then tried to drag Jeff toward the door as Sheamus and Cesaro escaped by climbing over the cage to end the match.
