Last weekend Sami Zayn stepped up to challenge CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship in the main event on Friday Night SmackDown, and Sami shocked the world when he managed to pin CM Punk and win the title for the second time in his career.
Sami’s big win shocked many as fans weren’t expecting to see CM Punk drop the Undisputed WWE Championship so soon. While talking about the title change on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that Sami winning the belt was done for storyline reasons, and the title change will make sense after everything plays out.
It was also noted that there were people in the company who were against the idea, but ultimately WWE moved forward with Sami becoming a two time Undisputed WWE Champion.
“With the Sami Zayn thing, the basic gist was they have a storyline that will make sense when you look back on it, is what I was told. When it’s all said and done this will all make sense. There was certainly people who were against it but they did it. And that was that.”
It’s not clear where things will go from here, but there are a number of big names who are currently involved in the title picture including CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Finn Balor and Gunther. Randy Orton also made it clear on SmackDown last week that he wants a shot at the title.
