SummerSlam night 2 featured several title matches, but one could argue that the Intercontinental Championship match was one of the most anticipated matches of the night. Chad Gable has been trying to win singles gold for some time now and he challenged Penta for the Intercontinental Title in his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Chad Gable made his entrance first and he looked emotional as he walked down the ramp. He hugged his family who were sitting in the front row before he got in the ring and did the clapping thing, which most of the crowd did with him. Penta entered next and he got the spinning pyro wheel in the ring behind him as he posed.
As soon as the bell rang the fans started chanting for Gable as he and Penta shook hands. Penta took control early on as the fans showed support for Gable by chanting “Let’s go Gable!”
Penta tried for a springboard move off the middle rope, but Gable caught him in mid-air and connected with three German suplexes. He bridged the last one and Penta kicked out at two. Penta threw Gable shoulder first into the turnbuckle and Gable started selling like he was hurt.
Gable went to the top for a moonsault and Penta hit him with a kick as he was coming down. Penta sent Gable to the outside then did a flip over the top rope to take him down. Chad Gable continued to sell the pain in his shoulder.
Back in the ring Penta connected with the Penta Driver for a two count. Gable sent Penta into the corner with a back body drop then went to the top rope. He tried for a diving headbutt, but Penta caught him on the way down and targeted his arm with the Sacrifice. Gable kicked out. The ref checked on Gable as Gable held his shoulder.
Penta told Gable he’s sorry then hit him with a kick. He tried for the Mexican Destroyer, but Gable turned it into the ankle lock and Penta got out of it. Penta tried for the Mexican Destroyer on the apron and Gable countered with a German suplex as Penta fell to the floor.
Gable went to the top rope and hit a moonsault off the top onto the floor. He rolled Penta back into the ring and connected with the diving headbutt. Gable sold that he was having a tough time covering Penta due to his shoulder and Penta kicked out at two.
They battled in the corner and Penta knocked Gable outside to the apron. Penta finally connected with the Mexican Destroyer on the apron. He rolled Gable into the ring and Chad Gable kicked out.
Penta went for the Mexican Destroyer again, but Gable grabbed his leg and put him in the ankle lock. Penta tried to grab the bottom rope, Gable dragged him back to the middle of the ring as Penta tapped out.
After the match Penta put the title around Gable’s waist and held his hand up. Gable’s family got in the ring and celebrated with him as the fans chanted “You deserve it!” Gable cut a brief promo in front of his hometown fans then chugged a Mug root beer after the Mug mascot handed it to him.
