There was a lot of anticipation heading into this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown as John Cena confirmed ahead of time that it would be his last appearance on the blue brand.

John Cena kicked off the show and he cut a passionate promo as he thanked the Chicago fans for all the moments he’s shared with them over the years. As Cena was trying to leave the ring Sami Zayn’s music hit and Zayn made his way out. Sami thanked John Cena for putting him on the map 10 years ago with the United States Open Challenge. He then asked Cena’s permission to carry on the legacy of the title with the Sami Zayn United States Open Challenge. Cena told him it sounds like a great idea, and then he tried to leave the ring again.

Sami Zayn stopped him and said that he wants to pay it forward the way that Cena paid it forward. He challenged John Cena to a United States Championship match on the spot and Cena accepted.

The match kicked off during the commercial break and when the show returned Cena and Sami Zayn were already pushing each other to the limit. At one point Cena managed to connect with the Attitude Adjustment, but Sami kicked out.

Later in the match Sami connected with his finisher in the corner and Cena kicked out at two. Cena followed up with the GTS on Sami who once again kicked out. After Sami kicked out John Cena connected with a spear and it still wasn’t enough to put Sami away. The fans started chanting “RKO!” Cena tried for it, but wasn’t able to connect.

John Cena put Sami on the ropes and went for an Avalanche AA. Sami tried to block it, but Cena connected. However, he was too tired to go for the pin.

As they were both down Brock Lesnar’s music hit. The Beast Incarnate took out the referee then hit Sami Zayn with the F5. He set his sights on Cena then hit Cena with the F5 as well. He hit Cena with the F5 again then put on his cowboy hat and left as the fans booed.

After the commercial break Brock Lesnar looked into the camera and told John Cena that he’ll see him at WrestlePalooza. WWE then officially announced that the next Cena vs. Lesnar match will take place at WrestlePalooza on September 20th.
