Last year Goldberg got into a heated confrontation with Gunther at the WWE Bad Blood premium live event, and shortly after the Hall of Famer announced that he would be competing in a retirement match in 2025.
On the June 9th episode of Monday Night Raw, Gunther managed to defeat Jey Uso to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and on the following episode Goldberg went on to announce that he would be challenging The Ring General for the belt at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
The show aired live from Atlanta on Saturday night and Gunther made his way out to the ring first when it was time for the main event. Goldberg did his classic entrance as he came out of the locker room and walked through the hallway with his son, Ernest The Cat Miller and Josh Barnett by his side. The Atlanta crowd loudly chanted his name as he walked to the ring one last time.
Gunther tried to get some offense in on the Hall of Famer after the bell rang, but Goldberg no sold The Ring General’s chops. Goldberg took the fight to Gunther in the corner then knocked him down with a clothesline. Gunther went to the top rope only for Goldberg to toss him into the middle of the ring. The former WCW star went for the spear, but Gunther rolled out of the ring.
Outside the ring Gunther delivered more chops to Goldberg as he shook them off. Bill tried to spear Gunther through the barricade as Gunther moved and Goldberg went through it.
Gunther then proceeded to focus on targeting Goldberg’s left knee which he had in a brace. They went chop for chop inside the ring and Gunther kicked the former WWE Universal Champion down. Goldberg picked Gunther up and slammed him to the mat then pummeled him in the corner.
Goldberg went for another spear, but Gunther moved out of the way and Goldberg ended up hitting the referee instead. Gunther kicked Goldberg’s knee and ripped off the protective brace. Gunther held up the brace while the fans booed. He then slammed the brace into Goldberg’s knee and hit him in the head with it.
Gunther taunted Goldberg’s son who was sitting in the front row. He chopped him and Gage hopped the barricade. Security quickly pulled him back. As Gunther got in the ring Goldberg connected with a spear and called for the Jackhammer.
He picked Gunther up for the Jackhammer and slammed him down as a referee ran out to count the pin. Goldberg struggled to cover Gunther as he sold his knee injury. Gunther kicked out at two then locked in the sleeper on Goldberg. The former WCW Champion used all his might as he tried to break the hold, but he passed out and Gunther was declared the winner.
After the match Goldberg’s friends and family joined him in the ring. He apologized for going out with a loss and he thanked all his friends and fans as the show went off the air.
