The road to WrestleMania was interesting this year to say the least. The Rock returned to set up a match with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40, but ultimately WWE ended up going with Cody Rhodes who defeated The Tribal Chief to win the Undisputed WWE Championship on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that The Rock had suggested he beat Roman Reigns for the title at WrestleMania 40 then vacate the belt and become People’s Champion. According to the report Roman Reigns and Triple H were “pretty strong” against the idea, so it wasn’t going to happen.
While Cody has confirmed that he was told about plans for Rock vs. Reigns before the Royal Rumble, it’s being said that nobody knew and everyone believed the match was still Cody vs. Roman when The American Nightmare won the 30 man Royal Rumble match.
Following WrestleMania 40, The Rock confronted Cody Rhodes the next night on Raw and teased a potential match with Cody in the future. It’s rumored that we could see The Final Boss vs. The American Nightmare at WrestleMania 41, so it will be interesting to see how things play out during WrestleMania season next year.
Stay tuned for updates.
