Back in 2016, Matt Hardy introduced the world to the Broken Universe and the Broken Hardys quickly become one of the most popular acts in all of professional wrestling. When the duo returned to WWE in 2017 many fans hoped they would return as the Broken Hardys, but instead they reverted back to their classic Hardy Boyz gimmick.
Matt Hardy explained on his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast that Triple H was open to the idea of using Broken Matt Hardy in WWE, but Vince was more keen on the original Hardy Boyz gimmick. However, eventually the “delete” chants became too strong for Vince McMahon to ignore, so he decided to give Broken Matt Hardy a chance.
“I remember talking to Triple H and he said ‘Maybe we could do a good Hardy Boyz run, kind of a throwback to the original WWE Hardy Boyz and then maybe we get into the Broken Matt Hardy in a little bit.’ And then Vince [McMahon] is like ‘They’re back in WWE, they’re the Hardy Boyz.’”
And then later on, whenever I did do Woken Matt Hardy, the WWE version. It’s so funny because we sat down, we talked for 30 minutes about what the character was or whatever. He says, ‘Well they keep doing, delete, delete, delete, delete, they won’t stop that s***. I guess we have to give it to them.’ So that became just part of who I am now.
