Over the years WWE has pushed the envelope with some controversial storylines, but even WWE has its limits. John Cena and Rusev certainly aren’t strangers as they feuded in 2015 and in 2017.
In 2017, John Cena and Rusev faced off in a flag match at the Battleground pay-per-view, and during a recent episode of the Oh…You Didn’t Know? podcast Road Dogg revealed that at one point WWE considered having Rusev burn the American flag.
“We always talked about, ‘Hey, let’s have Rusev burn an American Flag,’” Dogg said. “Everyone was like, ‘Oh, you couldn’t do that’ … I was one of the first people, ‘Oh, you can’t do that!’ Well, then I started writing for the television show and I started thinking, ‘Hey, this is a television show.’ You know what I mean?”
“Here it was like, ‘It may be real heat to have, you know, John Cena tied up and burn an American flag in front of John Cena, and then you go to the Flag match.”
John Cena was the one who picked up the win in the flag match at Battleground, and Rusev was released from WWE a few years later in 2020. He has since gone on to join All Elite Wrestling where he currently performs as Miro.
