The Rock has without a doubt become one of the biggest stars on the planet, but during his early days in WWE it took The Great One a little while to find himself. When Rock first arrived in WWE the fans rejected him, and in the end the rejection pushed him to make some major changes.
Mark Henry recently discussed The Rock’s humble beginnings in wrestling on Busted Open and he noted that at one point Rock was so frustrated with the direction of his character that he wanted to quit WWE completely.
“He fought that tooth and nail [to move away from his original gimmick]. It got to that point where he was like, ‘Man, I wish I could get to the quarterback because I will go back and play football.’ He hated it. He wanted to quit.”
“It got to the point where he finally said, ‘Hey, let me try some stuff,’ and when he started trying, he started trying it in the car. He was like, ‘Hey, Mark, what did you say your last name was?’ And I was like, ‘Fool, you know my last name, [imitates The Rock’s catchphrase] It doesn’t matter what your name is.’”
The Rock hasn’t wrestled a match in quite some time, but he did note during a recent interview that he’s open to getting back in the ring. It’s long been rumored that WWE is hoping to book The Rock vs. Roman Reigns for WrestleMania 39, but only time will tell if that ends up happening.
