The 6 Most Important Things That Happened At WWE Payback 2016

WWE Payback 2016 has come and gone and it was an interesting show to say the least. Today we’re going to take a look at the 6 most important things that happened at WWE Payback this year.

#6 – Enzo Amore Was Unfortunately Injured

WWE Payback got off to a great start with The Vaudevillains vs Enzo and Big Cass. But things unfortunately took a turn for the worst when Enzo was whipped into the ropes by Simon Gotch and he landed awkwardly. Enzo got some serious whiplash and things got really scary because he stopped moving when he hit the ground.

The match unfortunately had to be stopped and Enzo was carried out on a stretcher. Michael Cole later told fans that Enzo had been taken to a local medical facility and he was moving and talking. Cole later confirmed that Enzo had a concussion.

It was a scary way to start the show, but it sounds like Enzo is hopefully going to be ok. Get well soon Enzo!

#5 – Some New Faces Joined The IC Title Scene

Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens tore the house down, but in the end it was Kevin Owens who got the victory. After the match Owens decided to sit at the commentary to watch the IC Title match between Cesaro and The Miz.

During the match Sami Zayn returned and attacked Kevin Owens. The two eventually ended up on the ring apron and they cost Cesaro the match because the distraction allowed The Miz to roll him up for the win. After the match everyone brawled but Kevin Owens was the one that stood tall when the dust cleared, and he held up the IC Title in the ring to end the segment.

Cesaro vs The Miz has been pretty great so far, but there’s always room for a few more. Kevin Owens made it clear that he wants his Intercontinental Championship back and Sami Zayn made it clear that he’s not done with Kevin Owens. It looks like the IC title picture is going become a lot more crowded in the next few weeks.

#4 – Dean Ambrose Got A Much Needed Win Over Chris Jericho

Dean Ambrose got a much needed win Sunday night at WWE Payback when he defeated Chris Jericho. Ambrose didn’t have much luck in his match with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 32, but he’s kicking off the post-WrestleMania season with a victory over a legend.

Ambrose vs Jericho was definitely fun. Both guys were animated, they looked like they were having a good time and it showed. Jericho and and Ambrose proved that they have great chemistry and they left us wanting more. Here’s to hoping these two meet up again in a street fight at Extreme Rules.

#3 – Natalya Vs Charlotte Ends With A Confusing Screw Job

In the world of professional wrestling, screw jobs happen from time to time. The most infamous screw job of course is the Montreal Screw Job and WWE tried to recreate the incident at Payback with less than stellar results. Charlotte had Natalya in the Sharpshooter and referee Charles Robinson called for the bell despite the fact that Natalya wasn’t tapping out.

There was literally no reason at all for Charles Robinson to call for the bell and after it happened there was no explanation as to why he ended the match. This ending was just bad, that’s all there is to it.

But hey, whatever, at least we got to see Bret Hart put Ric Flair in the Sharpshooter.

#2 – Vince Put Both Shane And Stephanie In Charge Of Raw

Before the main event Vince McMahon made his way to the ring to make his big announcement. The crowd greeted him with “CM Punk!” chants and Stephanie McMahon came out to the ring followed by Shane. Both of the McMahon siblings pleaded their case and Vince made his decision.

Vince told them that they will both be running Monday Night Raw going forward and that they have to figure it out. Shane and Stephanie then shook hands and left the ring.

The McMahon siblings seem to be off the a good start, but it’s doubtful that this partnership is going to last long.

#1 – The Main Event Served Little To No Purpose

AJ Styles delivered in his first main event on WWE pay-per-view with Roman Reigns, but the match unfortunately served little to no purpose. First Styles won the match by count out, then Shane McMahon announced that the match would continue with no count outs. Then Styles won by DQ when Roman accidentally hit him with a low blow, but then Stephanie announced that the match would be restarted and it would be a no disqualification match.

Anderson and Gallows interfered, but we didn’t get any indication as to whether or not Styles is with them or not, so that storyline didn’t advance at all. Reigns defeated Styles and then immediately after the match ended it was announced that basically the win didn’t matter because Styles will be getting another shot at the title at Extreme Rules.

With the exception of the awkward restarts, the action was pretty solid so there’s definitely reason to believe that Styles and Reigns will put on a great show at Extreme Rules. But once again, what purpose did this match serve?
