John Cena hasn’t been United States Champion for very long but he’s already done more for the championship over the course of a few shows than most people have done for it in the past few years. Having a fighting champion that holds an open challenge every week is exciting. It creates some great opportunities for younger stars when that champion is John Cena. There are a lot of people that could benefit from working with a huge star like John Cena and these are the people we want to see challenge him.
#5 – Curtis Axel
Curtis Axel has been working pretty hard over the past few years but he’s had somewhat of a tough time finding himself as an on screen character. With his recent run doing the Axelmania shtick you can really see some charisma shining through and you can see a certain spark there. It may not be a gimmick that can last the test of time but it’s proof that the guy has entertainment value.
What Curtis Axel needs now is a great match to be synonymous with his character. He needs a match that will get people talking and John Cena can give him that match. A hard fought battle against John Cena with Axel scoring a few close pinfalls could go a long way when it comes to establishing him as a serious threat in the eyes of the fans.
#4 – Cesaro
When Cesaro and John Cena face off against each other in a WWE ring it’s must see TV. Every time these two go toe to toe it gets everyone talking. Cesaro and Cena just have such great chemistry together that it makes you want to see them beat each other up again and again.
Cesaro and Cena have had excellent matches in the past and you can always expect a battle between these two to be great. But what makes this match intriguing now is the addition of Tyson Kidd and Natalya. Having Cesaro’s team at ringside adds an extra threat for John Cena to overcome and it would make for a fun match if Cena had to wrestle Cesaro but also worry about Kidd and Natalya.
#3 – Damien Sandow
Damien Sandow has quite a bit of momentum behind him after breaking away from The Miz and we’re all wondering what he’s going to do next. There’s little doubt that the fans would go crazy over a match featuring Damien Sandow challenging John Cena for the US Championship so hopefully WWE makes it happen.
Sandow has done some great work from a character standpoint over the last year. He’s taken everything WWE has handed him and turned it into pure gold. He also happens to have had his best match in WWE so far against John Cena when he cashed in his money in the bank briefcase on him a while back. The fans already love Damien Sandow’s character but a championship match with John Cena would remind them why they love watching him work in the ring as well.
#2 – Daniel Bryan
Daniel Bryan and John Cena are on a mission to elevate their respective championships and there’s no better way to do that than by having them face off in a champion vs champion match. Cena and Bryan are two of the biggest names in the business today and this match could be a big draw for the WWE.
These two already proved that they can work well together at SummerSlam in 2013 and fans have been hoping to see them face off again ever since. This match doesn’t necessarily have to be a random open challenge match either. If WWE spent a little bit of time to promote this contest, it could get a lot of people interested. This could be a huge match for everyone involved which makes it a win/win for the fans.
#1 – Neville
Neville got quite the reaction when he officially made his way to the main roster and when it came time to deliver in the ring, he did just that. If he wants to make a big splash early on in his main roster career then challenging John Cena is the way to do it.
These two don’t need to say anything to each other, they both know how to tell a story in the ring and that’s all we need. Neville has wrestled all over the world and proved time and time again that he has what it takes to be a major player. Now he just needs a major star to help establish him on a bigger stage and John Cena might just be the man to do it.
