Night of Champions is over and done with and although only one title changed hands it was a major title.
Daniel Bryan is now the WWE Champion once again after defeating Randy Orton while all other champions successfully defended their titles.
Night of Champions certainly wasn’t the most exciting pay-per-view this year but it did get a few things right. Let’s take a look at 5 moments from Night of Champions that WWE got right.
5. The Tag Teams
You might not know it but WWE has some pretty damn good tag teams. The problem is that the powers that be don’t seem to be as passionate about tag team wrestling as they once were so quite often these teams never get their chance to shine. Last night however that was not the case as the tag team division opened the show with a tag team turmoil match. The match saw the Primetime Players defeat The Real Americans, 3MB, Tons of Funk and The Usos to earn a shot at the tag team championship later that night.
The Primetime players really stepped up their game and they seem to have gotten over with the crowd thanks to this face turn. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to consider giving them a tag team title reign sometime soon as that would give them and The Shield something to do. The biggest problem with tag teams nowadays is that there doesn’t seem to be any real rivalry between teams and the titles don’t get the defended nearly enough. Put the titles on the Primetime Players and have them and The Shield swap them back and forth a few times. That will get people invested in the division.
4. AJ Lee Retains
AJ Lee managed to retain her Divas Championship at Night of Champions in what was actually a pretty good Divas match. The WWE Divas surprised quite a few people with this match and Naomi especially brought her A game. All of the girls seemed to have chemistry but Naomi and AJ really stuck out which makes me hope for a Naomi/AJ rivalry sometime in the near future. In the end AJ retained her title by making Natalya tap out.
AJ retaining was the best direction to go here as she truly has been untouchable in the WWE Divas division. The Divas Championship needs to be prestigious once again and no one is going to build up that prestige better than AJ.
3. CM Punk Gets Revenge
CM Punk has been waiting to get his hands on Paul Heyman for months now and last night he finally got his opportunity to get his revenge on Paul. After defeating Curtis Axel Punk won the right to face off against Heyman in a NoDq match. Things were going great for a while and Punk even managed to handcuff Paul while beating him with a kendo stick. It was great to see Punk finally get some retribution after weeks of Heyman and Curtis Axel getting the upper hand on CM Punk.
It’s a shame that his revenge was so short lived….
2. Ryback Is The New Paul Heyman Guy
It seemed pretty obvious that WWE were planning to debut a new Paul Heyman guy at Night of Champions as Curtis Axel hasn’t been able to get the job done lately. Heyman is too smart to go in to a match with CM Punk without having a backup plan and when it was time to call in reinforcements he called in Ryback.
We mentioned in our article HERE a few weeks ago that Paul Heyman would be getting a new guy soon and that Ryback was a likely candidate. This seems like it could be a good match for both Heyman and Ryback because Ryback needs heat and Heyman needs someone who looks unstoppable and at Night of Champions Ryback looked unstoppable.
There’s no telling where this leaves Curtis Axel but it can’t be good for his relationship with Heyman. he lost his match forcing Heyman to get beat down and then he couldn’t even save him from CM Punk. I don’t see things working out for Axel and Heyman much longer.
1. Daniel Bryan Is WWE Champion!
After the past few weeks nothing was more satisfying than seeing Daniel Bryan beat Randy Orton for the WWE Championship pretty much clean. I’ve been saying to myself for weeks now that it would be a mistake to keep the title off of Daniel Bryan much longer. No one is more over than him at the moment and no one is even close. Daniel Bryan gets some of the loudest pops ever and to top it all off he can have a good match with anyone.
Daniel Bryan doesn’t need to chase the title anymore. Daniel is already at a level where he should be holding it and even though Randy Orton’s recent heel turn was much needed for his character Randy’s time in the spotlight is over. Randy has had his chance many times and we’ve seen him as the bad guy champion before. It can be entertaining but it’s time to give someone else the time to shine and that man is Daniel Bryan.
There was some controversy over a fast count so I would expect that to come in to play on Raw tonight. The Daniel Bryan/Randy Orton feud will most likely continue for a few pay-per-views and the best thing they could do right now is just make Daniel Bryan look as strong as possible. Daniel Bryan has the IT factor and now that he has the ball it would be smart on WWE’s part to let him run with it.
