The Royal Rumble is one of the most fun matches you will see all year. Thirty men enter the ring until only one is left and the winner gets a title shot at WrestleMania. The match itself is always entertaining regardless of who’s in it but WWE usually looks to up the ante with a few surprise entrants every year. The pressure is on WWE this year to deliver when it comes to surprise entrants and there’s no shortage of options that’s for sure. Here are 11 surprise entrants we would love to see in the Royal Rumble match.
11. Goldberg
This seems highly unlikely but if this were to happen it would without a doubt get the biggest reaction of the night. Rumors have been flying around for years now that Goldberg and WWE are hoping to negotiate a deal for a WrestleMania match. This year it seems more likely than ever as Goldberg seems open to it. Quite a few people are hoping to see Goldberg at WrestleMania XXX but no one would expect him to show up at the Royal Rumble.
10. Rob Van Dam
It’s somewhat confusing as to why Rob Van Dam hasn’t made a return to WWE since his most recent run with the company. Rob was putting on great matches every time he stepped in the ring and was treated quite well by the company. Rob Van Dam was prominently featured in title matches, main events and it’s obvious by his crowd reaction that he hasn’t lost one bit of his popularity. One has to assume that WWE wants RVD back for WrestleMania season and the Royal Rumble would be the perfect place for him to return.
9. Chris Jericho
Chris Jericho got us good last year when he made his return as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble. In the age of the internet where it’s pretty much impossible to keep anything a secret Jericho pulled it off. No one saw it coming and that’s a very rare thing these days. It might not come off as a huge surprise to do it two years in a row but as long as we get Jericho back I don’t think any of us would really care when it comes to the lack of surprise.
8. Billy Gunn
Road Dogg has already had great success as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble so it might be Billy Gunn’s turn to have a go with it. Billy is still in great shape and he’s kept his in ring skills together by working as a trainer in NXT. Every time Billy makes an appearance on WWE TV it’s as one half of the New Age Outlaws so seeing him make an appearance on his own would be a nice change of pace.
7. Ken Shamrock
Ken Shamrock hasn’t been seen on WWE TV in a long time. Ken saw a good amount of success when he joined the company during the attitude era and managed to adapt to pro wrestling quite well which is not something many MMA fighters can say. Newer WWE fans might not be as familiar with Ken Shamrock but you can bet that throwing him in the Royal Rumble would get a great reaction from the fans that lived through the attitude era.
6. MVP
MVP has been teasing a WWE return for a good amount of 2013. He hasn’t been shy about answering fan questions as to his WWE status and it sounds like the two sides are open to working together again. If MVP wants to return for one night the Royal Rumble match would be the perfect way to do it, on the flip side if MVP wants to make an impact and kick off another run in WWE, the Royal Rumble would be his best bet.
5. John Morrison
It’s believed that the ball is in John Morrison’s court when it comes to a WWE return. We all want him back but he’s busy with other things. Whether you like John Morrison or not you can’t deny that he’s always entertaining in the Royal Rumble match. John manages to pull off that one memorable spot everyone talks about when he enters the Royal Rumble and we’d love to see him add another memorable moment to his WWE legacy.
4. Carlito
It seems that rumors fly just about every year when it comes to Carlito entering the Royal Rumble. Like John Morrison it’s believed that the door is wide open for Carlito the make a WWE return but he has his own reasons for staying away. Carlito’s star fades with each passing day and the WWE fans will forget about him at some point if he chooses not to return…but they haven’t forgotten about him yet and a Carlito appearance could add some much needed fun to the Royal Rumble match.
3. Jake Roberts
Jake Roberts has been lobbying to get a spot in the Royal Rumble for months now, so why not give it to him? Jake’s recovery story has been very inspiring and it would be great publicity for WWE to show the world just how much Jake has managed to turn his life around. Obviously he’s gotten up there in age and he wouldn’t be able to do much but the nostalgia pop would be worth bringing him in.
2. AJ Styles
We all know that this isn’t going to happen but we can dream can’t we? WWE doesn’t have any interest in AJ Styles this much we all know but still it would be mutually beneficial for both parties to make this happen. As much as WWE doesn’t want to admit it, AJ Styles has name value and bringing in an already established star from another company could lend some much needed hype to the Royal Rumble match but like I said…we all know this isn’t going to happen.
1. The Undertaker
How perfect would it be for The Undertaker to return as a surprise entrant in the 2014 Royal Rumble? It would make for some entertaining TV that’s for sure. Taker doesn’t have to win but seeing as how he usually returns sometime between the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania it would be nice to see WWE switch it up this year. On the flip side if Cena ends up winning the belt and Taker ends up winning the Royal Rumble it could make for a huge main event pitting the streak against the title. John Cena VS The Undertaker at WrestleMania is one of the last big money matches that the streak has and this would be a perfect way to set it up.
