Can you believe that Money in the Bank has been a part of WWE for over 10 years now? Time flies when you’re cashing in contracts for guaranteed title opportunities. The first man to ever win the briefcase was WWE Hall of Famer Edge and it was 10 years ago on this date that he cashed it in on John Cena to become WWE Champion for the first time.
Edge won the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 21 and then proceeded to hold on to the briefcase for a very long time. No one knew what to expect from a Money in the Bank cash in so it was shocking to see what Edge did with it.
After defending his title in a brutal Elimination Chamber match at the 2006 New Year’s Revolution pay-per-view, John Cena was greeted by Vince McMahon who announced that Edge would be cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase. Cena tried his best to defend himself, but in the end it was too much for him to overcome. Edge defeated John Cena and made history on that night.
