When news broke yesterday that WWE was looking to purchase ROH from Sinclair Broadcasting, it was shocking and expected at the same time. It was noted in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the biggest selling point in the deal to WWE would be the ROH tape library. Obviously, WWE wants to get their hands on early matches from Daniel Bryan, Samoa Joe, Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, Austin Aries, and others.

Dave Meltzer says he has been told WWE first showed interest in buying Ring of Honor in August last year, and at the time WWE wanted to use the deal for more than just acquiring ROH’s extensive tape library.

ROH COO, Joe Koff has yet to comment on the ongoing situation. People in WWE reportedly confirmed that two weeks ago there were meetings going on, but nothing materialized. Therefore, at this point nothing is concrete.

It was noted that Sinclair Broadcasting, ROH’s parent company, has way more resources than they are putting into Ring of Honor and has “never gotten fully behind the company.” Now that the word is out, just the idea of talks with WWE might affect some of the ongoing partnerships Ring of Honor has with other companies like CMLL or New Japan.
