John Cena lost to AJ Styles at WWE SummerSlam, and after the match was over he took off his armband and left it in the ring. AJ Styles started wearing the armband as a headband, and it must have given him some good luck because he won the WWE World Championship on Sunday.
Cena recently participated in a panel at Salt Lake City Comic Con, and he was asked why he took off his armband at SummerSlam, and Cena told fans that the removal of the armband was significant.
“That actually has a lot of significance. It was a very important piece of symbolism. Unfortunately, right now it’s just for me, and you’re going to have to wait to find out what it actually means.”
You can check out the full panel below.
John Cena wasn’t a part of WWE Backlash on Sunday, and he hasn’t been seen on WWE programming since SummerSlam. Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Cena is scheduled to be at No Mercy on October 9. There were plans to do another John Cena vs. AJ Styles match at some point, but it remains to be seen how and/or if AJ Styles winning the WWE Championship may have changed those plans.
