When The Drifter Elias Samson showed up at WWE Extreme Rules just to sing a song it left a lot of people scratching their heads. Nobody came out to stop Samson, no program was started, and no story was progressed. He just showed up, got heat on himself, and made people hate acoustic guitars more than they already did.

Samson was able to actually speak before he started singing and showed some more technical skill on the guitar than he had before too. His words were cutting and insulting to the Baltimore crowd and everything he said was both brutal and brooding. His gimmick seems to be working and not working at all at the same time. It’s quite a strange situation in Drifter Land.

Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio The Drifter was simply called out to insult the city of Baltimore because WWE had time to kill. With only six matches on the Extreme Rules card WWE needed to fill time. So they called upon the musical promo abilities of Elias Samson.

Four matches on the Extreme Rules show were over fifteen minutes and even with the addition of Samson’s segment the event was still around ten minutes short. WWE also had to scramble to add a kickoff show match on the day of the event. It’s nice to know Elias Samson has the kind of job security where WWE can just use him whenever they need to in order to waste some time and enrage a crowd.

Whether or not you’re a fan of Elias Samson doesn’t seem to matter because Vince McMahon is going to do whatever he wants anyway. But so far in The Drifter’s main roster run he’s had a much better showing than he ever did in NXT. All in all, The Drifter’s musical promo was a pretty good addition. We’ve certainly seen bigger wastes of time on WWE television.
