Last night at Backlash, Jinder Mahal became the WWE Champion after beating Randy Orton in the main event. Many people believed that WWE officials wouldn’t pull the trigger on the title change, but it was decided a few hours before that Mahal winning was the right move.

The WWE Universe is aware that the company is trying to break into the Indian market, and Jinder’s push and WWE Title victory is all a part of that process. However, it’s being reported by the Wrestling Observer that last night’s PPV did not sell out and part of the reason may be Mahal’s push.

Apparently, WWE’s ticket prices were also high for the event. Both factors are being blamed for the show not being sold out, which was surprising because it took place in Chicago. But, it is being considered an early indication of how Mahal’s push is impacting WWE financially.

Unfortunately, it’s too early to tell if WWE is making significant progress in the Indian market because the company is only making money from the television deal in India. It’ll take some time before we know how merchandise sales and WWE Network subscribers are impacted by Jinder Mahal holding the WWE Title. But, the company may be willing to take the hit for how.
